The Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 race held at Goodwood over one mile and it is one of the biggest races of the summer in the UK. The race is open to horses age three years and over meaning it often attracts the very best of the classic horses as well as the best of the older horses making for a fascinating battle. The race takes place during the week long Glorious Goodwood festival at the end of July and it is without doubt the feature race of the week with the mile always a blue riband distance. The first Sussex Stakes was run all the way back in 1841 but it didnt become a one mile race until 1878 where it has remained ever since with the race open to all ages since 1975.
Some of the most famous names in the history of the sport have taken in and won the Sussex Stakes with the timing of the race crucial to this as it falls long enough after Royal Ascot for the best milers to run in both. While no horse has ever won the Sussex more than once we have seen some great winners of the race including the great Brigadier Gerard who won at Goodwood in 1971. The Dick Hern trained horse was on his way to becoming one of the best horses in the history of the sport when he won the Sussex Stakes and that only serves to highlight the potential importance of the race to the sport.
The Sussex Stakes has really grown in popularity since the year 2000 with a number of top class winners in succession from the very best trainers in the world. Aidan OBrien loves to send his best mile horses to the race which is highlighted by the fact he has saddled Giants Causeway, Rock of Gibralter, Henrythenavigator and Rip Van Winkle to wins in the race. They are all multiple Group 1 horse racing winners at the best while the same can be said of the excellent Canford Cliffs who cruised to a win in 2010 when well backed for Richard Hannon. Most believe that Canford Cliffs would become the first horse ever to win the race twice in 2011 but he came up against Frankel who simply blew him out of the water. The Sir Henry Cecil trained horse won the race in scintillating fashion on his way to being rated the best in the world in 2011.
